The NOMAD project will initially target the campus environment, recognizing the potential of a diverse user base ideally suited to experimental deployment of innovative services. Full time & part time students, support staff, academic staff, administration and visitors all interact with the campus environment in many different ways, with differing objectives and utilizing both manual and automated process.

NOMAD is currently designing and will shortly start to build and deploy a platform for service development and a set of services aggregated into a portal tailored to specific user needs and usage patterns. Services will exploit current and emerging communications technology: including mobile telephony, messaging, WAP & Java download mobile applications, WiFi via PDA and portable computers, and desktop web access. It will also bear in mind the potential of 3G roll-out and potential 3G/WiFi interoperation. It is expected that user and service profiles, location based services and single sign-on to a “MyNomad” portal will constitute part of the NOMAD user experience, with an assumption of widespread wireless infrastructure and access devices.
